Levels of Success

I teach 7 grade levels of 600 kids each week as a STEAM teacher. I need my check-ins with students to be quick and help me locate who needs help and who might be feeling a shutdown is near. Routines like this can be used across grade levels, year after year, and with ANY project. Sometimes I’ll shout out for

“Give me a hand on how you’re feeling?”

“How ready/confident are you?”

“Let’s check our understanding?”

“How successful are you feeling?”

Years ago, I created “Levels of Success” as a flexible rubric that we could build in the moment, regardless of the project. I write the expectation at level 3 and then let student responses create what is above and below. It leads to growth mindset conversations and acknowledgment that true failure is only if you quit. As a specialist teacher, class time blocks fly so quickly that routines are mandatory to keep the flow and focus. The ability to use this year after year- no matter the grade level- has helped make reflection part of the norm!
